"Why is that boy crying, Mommy?" San asked me as she watched a street dancer shedding tears of joy when he got selected after auditioning for a reality show.
"He's crying because he's happy.", I said.
"Why is he crying if he's happy?" San asked with a question mark on her face. Now that is a very obvious question that you can expect from a three-year old in this situation.
It was difficult to explain her the concept of happy tears. I only told her that some people tend to cry when they are very happy. I was tempted to quote some great examples of happy tears from my life, but they wouldn't have helped. I guess she'd understand when she experiences it herself!
Did you ever need to explain happy tears to your kids?

Maybe, something like this!
Did you ever need to explain happy tears to your kids?
yea. it was some sports event and some girl and her mother both were badly crying after winning. Saad was terribly amazed and couldn’t understand whatever i explained first. then i said – the girl’s gone mad after winning, thus she’s crying and mother’s crying for her daughter’s gone mad. and it was understood and accepted.
ReplyDeletehaha! what a wonderful explanation, Noor! :D
Deletewith girls, it's tears anywhere, anytime! tougher to explain a guy's tears to a kid I guess! :D
yes. perhaps. i've realised one thing, that the child is never going to take the normal answer. they want an answer that make them happy. D, share some questions what you face or have faced, on facebook, and let us all give the answer. San wd be the final judge. :)

DeleteTears, I believe are manifestations of extreme emotions be they while one is happy or sad.
ReplyDeleteThat explains. But to tell a kid is tough indeed
yes, very tough, Partha!
DeleteHey..
ReplyDeleteNo, not tears. But a lot 'other' things that I wish could have started when these boys turned 13... :)
haha! btw, where have you been??
DeleteIt is difficult to explain certain emotions to a child because they are usually very logic driven and literal!
ReplyDeleteyup, and it's difficult to simplify logical stuff. :)
DeleteYes we've discussed it especially the type of laughter n crying where you can't tell if it's for joy or embarrassment. That sort sometimes I can't even tell. Heh heh..
ReplyDeleteI know! At times, you just can't tell the difference. :)
